Transportation
ACPHD's Goal
- All residents can easily access a world class public transportation system that is clean, safe, affordable, and reliable. These services are equitably distributed, with particular attention paid to transit-dependent communities, and are connected to a safe walking and biking infrastructure to reduce the dependence on automobiles. Communities and the environment are protected from the negative impacts of goods movement.
- Neighborhoods have clean air, soil, and water. All residents have access to quality jobs, food, affordable housing and transit, open spaces and other goods and services people need to be healthy. Communities are violence free and designed to promote social interaction and neighborhood identity. Communities are free from a high concentration of businesses and industry that harm health and risk factors are reduced.
Background Information
Current Projects
Regional Transportation Funding and Bus Access Health Impact Assessment: In partnership with numerous community stakeholders and other government institutions, the Alameda County Place Matters team is conducting a Health Impact Assessment on regional funding for bus service, specifically AC Transit, as determined in the Regional Transportation Plan. Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is a tool used to inform decision-makers about the potential health impacts of a specific policy or plan. HIA uses research - both community based and academic - to uncover the health impacts that a specific policy or plan will have on different populations, and recommends changes to ensure that the policy contributes to healthy communities. This HIA will analyze the potential health implications of funding for AC Transit, which can determine changes to bus service and fares which in turn affect bus access. Bus access is particularly critical for low-income communities of color, people with disbilities, seniors, and limited English speakers because these populations already struggle with the worst health outcomes countywide and rely on buses to reach basic goods and services.
