Death Cap Mushroom Poisoning Information
What's Happening?
Since December 2025, 35 Bay Area residents have been hospitalized and three have died after ingesting poisonous Death Cap mushrooms while forging in the wild. Recent rains have created ideal conditions for mushroom growth.
Symptoms of Mushroom Poisoning
Liver Failure can occur if not treated immediately. Early symptoms are:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Jaundice
Act Now
- If you suspect mushroom poisoning, call California Poison Control System immediately: 1-800-222-1222 or Dial 911
- Avoid foraging for wild mushrooms during this high-risk season
- Keep pets away from mushrooms
Responsible Foraging
- Knowledge is Power - if you aren't 100% sure what you have, do not eat it
- Safely ID a Mushroom - consult at least three reputable sources (guidebook, app, online resource, local experts)
