Travelers

Pregnant women should not travel to areas with Zika.  If your patient or his or her partner is trying to get pregnant, avoid nonessential travel to areas with Zika. If pregnant women must travel to areas with Zika provide advice on mosquito bite prevention and use of a condom every time they have sex or not to have sex during pregnancy.  Length of time for sexual transmission precautions is as follows:

  • If female partner traveled: Use barrier methods or do not have sex for at least 8 weeks after travel or from start of symptoms.
  • If male partner traveled: Use barrier methods or do not have sex for at least 6 months after travel or from start of symptoms.

Even if they do not feel sick, travelers returning to U.S. from an area should take steps to prevent mosquito bites for 3 weeks so they do not spread Zika to mosquitos that could spread the virus to other people.

Check current Zika travel notices when counseling travelers.
