Blood Safety

Zika Virus can spread through blood transfusions. To date, there have been no confirmed blood transfusion-transmission cases in the United States.

The FDA issued revised guidance on 8/26/16 which calls for blood collection centers in the United States to screen all donated blood for Zika virus, starting immediately with Miami-Dade County & Palm Beach County, FL, in high-risk states (including CA) within 4 weeks, and in all states within 12 weeks.
