A developmental disability is a term used to define a disability that occurs before the age of 18, is substantially disabling for an individual, and is expected to continue indefinitely. These disabilities include intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism and other disabling conditions closely related or requiring similar treatment. Developmental disabilities affect daily functioning in three or more of the following areas: capacity for independent living, economic self-sufficiency, learning, mobility, receptive and expressive language, self-care, and self-direction.
